Organizers: Bruce Hayden & John Porter, VCR LTER
This workshop had as its goal bringing together current and potential future users of historical imagery for an exchange of ideas, information on sources and uses of aerial and satellite imagery. It was attended by nine individuals from five LTER sites (VCR, FCE, HFR, SBC, PIE).
The goals of the workshop were attained as there was a wide ranging and productive discussion of how sites are, or would like to be, using imagery. The wireless networking in the meeting room allowed real-time visits to potential sources for imagery and historical maps. During the workshop we were able to tracking down actual maps or images for several LTER sites, some dating back to the mid-1800s. Several sites provided in-depth examples of how such image data was being used to place LTER research in a longer term historical context and to examine land use history for the sites.
Recommendations of the workshop participants were that there should be a greater exchange of information on sources of imagery (e.g., a web page that contains links to sources) and additional bilateral or multilateral exchanges of information on the suitability of different classes of images for particular purposes. Subsequent to the workshop there have been several email exchanges regarding sources and materials discussed at the workshop.
