Designing a
Network of Hydrologic Observatories
The design concepts for hydrologic observatories being developed by a consortium of universities conducting research in the hydrologic sciences was presented at this workshop. These observatories are conceived to be instrumented river basins at a scale on the order of 10,000 square km, much larger than typical LTER sites. Discussion focused on the potential role of LTER's to "anchor" hydrologic observatories, methods to achieve data comparability between LTERs and hydrologic observatories, and how hydrologic observatories will be networked together. LTER scientists were encouraged to get involved with the development of hydrologic observatories underway at their universities or in their regions of the country.
