However, if lambs are placed with abusive heifers, i.e., bovines which butt and kick at the lambs, during pen confinement a strong bond will not develop. Heifers identified as abusive to lambs and nonabusive heifers were placed with 75 d old lambs for 55 d. Following 20 d, the lambs penned with nonabusive heifers were observed in a large pasture. We concluded that a strong bond had formed between the nonabusive lamb groups while the lambs penned with abusive heifers required 55 d of pen confinement before a satisfactory bond was evident. During confinement, lambs which were penned with abusive heifers spent more time in a creep area away from the heifer compared to the time lambs penned with the nonabusive heifers spent in the creep area. Abusive heifers should be identified and not used for bonding sheep to cattle in order to assure efficient positive results.</style>
<accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">LTER.1987-91831</style></accession-num></record></records></xml>
