size="100%">eng</style></language><abstract><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">The disturbance regime of shortgrass steppe ecosystems consists of a number of different types of disturbances operating over a range of spatial and temporal scales. Each disturbance type has its own set of characteristics including size, frequency of occurrence, intensity, and location by soil texture, topographic position, and grazing intensity by cattle. These  characteristics result in different short-term, localized effects on plant as well as long-term, broad-scale effects as the disturbances accumulate through time. Although successional studies have been conducted in these grasslands for over a century, our understanding of the role of different kinds of disturbances in generating and maintaining patterns in vegetation and species dominance in shortgrass ecosystems has developed only since the 1980's. Our current view of the role of disturbance is a dynamic one where the recovery of vegetation depends upon interactions among disturbance  characteristics and the life history traits of plants. This gap dynamics conceptualization provides an alternative view of vegetation dynamics compared to traditional successional models based on Clements. Much of the recent work on disturbances in the shortgrass steppe has focused on the relationships between disturbance characteristics and plant life history traits in order to test these different models. A gap dynamics approach focuses on individual plants, and the interactions between disturbance characteristics and plant life history traits in explaining successional patterns. We developed a gap dynamics model for shortgrass steppe plant communities (STEPPE) based upon the conceptual and modeling framework provided by forest models, modifying it to represent Great Plains grasslands. We used STEPPE in several capacities: (1) to synthesize and integrate existing knowledge to improve our understanding of recovery processes following disturbance; (2) to identify key processes limiting recovery; and (3) to predict long- term recovery dynamics for different climate and disturbance characteristics, in particular soil texture and disturbance size. Our analyses show that seed dispersal is a key process limiting recovery of the dominant species, blue grama, across a range of disturbance sizes. Together, photosynthesis response and phenology determine no temporal segregation in growth for these 2 grasses.  To study competitive abilities, we performed 2 experiments that combined both  species to compare intra- and interspecific competition.  One experiment was planted in a small homogeneous area and ran for 3 years; the other occupied an area 9-times larger and lasted 2 years.  In each, we planted target plants of both species in a honeycomb design to get a combination of species, to control plant size and neighborhood asymmetries at the start of the experiment, and to represent field conditions.  Steel cylinders placed around half the target plants reduced belowground competition.  Plant biomass and seed production of plants growing inside the cylinders (reduced dcompetition) were higher than target plants growing in competition.  In neither experiment was relative growth rate affected by competition in the last year.  There was no difference between the two species in intra- and interspecific relative competition intensity (calculated with biomass); seed production was more variable than biomass. In some years, intra- and interspecific competition equally reduced seed production; in others, the interspecific competition effect was more intense.  Competition theory predicts intraspecific competition must be greater than interspecific for 2 species with similar requirements to achieve coexistence. We used a dataset of rangeland surveys to examine the productivities of 22 plant species throughout the Great Plains of the U.S. with respect to three environmental factors: temperature,  precipitation, and soil texture.  Productivity and soil texture were obtained from NRCS range site descriptions and STATSGO databases.  Climate data were obtained from 296 weather stations located throughout the region. Mean annual temperature was the most important explanatory variable for 55% of species analyzed.  Mean annual precipitation was most explanatory for 40% of the species.  Productivity of C3 species was negatively related to climate and positively related to clay content.  Production of C4 shortgrasses was positively related to temperature and negatively related  to precipitation and sand content.  By contrast, production of C4 tallgrasses was positively related to precipitation and sand and highest at intermediate values of temperature. However, it has been suggested that long-distance clonal spreading can allow some perennial plants to survive in highly disturbed areas by quickly spreading into disturbed patches. To evaluate these hypotheses, we analysed data of plant distributions in two different ecosystems, a barrier island and a short-grass steppe. The disturbances studied were sand deposition during storms (overwash) on the barrier island and grazing by cattle in the short-grass steppe. In each case the disturbance frequency varied over the ecosystem; we categorized different areas in terms of their disturbance frequencies. All plant species in each area were categorized as one of four plant life forms (1) annual or biennial, (2) herbaceous perennial without long-distance clonal spreading (3) herbaceous perennial with long-distance clonal spreading (i.e guerilla form) and (4) woody plant. Percentage cover of each plant life form in each disturbance frequency category was calculated. In both ecosystems, (1) there was an increase in the relative cover of annuals as one moved from areas of low to moderate disturbance frequencies, but then a decrease in cover of annuals as one moved into the areas of highest disturbance frequency and (2) the guerilla forms showed the greatest relative increase in cover from moderately to highly disturbed areas. The combination of two factors can explain this pattern: (1) long-distance clonal spreading effectively reduces the time to colonization of recently disturbed sites and (2) effects of the disturbances in these two systems are probably more severe for seeds than for stems.
