1885 - 1994
The Extratropical storms (centers of low pressure) passing through the region, 1885 through 1994, were tabulated at the University of Virginia by 2.5 degree latitude and 5.0 degrees longitude. Storm counts for the lat-lon grid cell in which the Jornada is found follows.
In the earliest years of the record storminess increased from 6 or 7 to around 15 per year by 1920. Storminess declined after that. The National Weather Service did not track storms over mountainous areas between 1950 and 1975. After 1975 storminess increased. Work to extend this record to 2015 is in progress but will require several years to complete.
