| Abstract | Although cities have existed for over 6000 yr, scientists are just beginning to understand how the physical, ecological and social components of an urban ecosystem interact and how they are affected by the burgeoning growth of cities and their suburbs. Only through this understanding can we begin to develop sustainable cities that ensure a quality of life for both urban and rural residents and maintain natural habitats for native plants and animals. |
