Staff Associate, Palmer Antarctica LTER

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located on the Lamont Campus in Rockland County, NY is seeking a Staff Associate to manage, under the supervision of Hugh Ducklow (Palmer LTER), an oceanographic research laboratory and engage in field work in Antarctica and other locations.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage research lab, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, including supplies and analytical instrumentation. 30%
- Analyze field and lab samples and prepare raw data for submission to archives. 30%
- Train and supervise students and field assistants and ensure safe lab practices. 20%
- Organize, prepare and stage equipment and supplies for annual research expeditions. 20%

REQUIREMENTS:
BS in chemistry, biology, oceanography or field ecology plus 4 years of related experience with fieldwork and analytical lab instrumentation; or an MS in chemistry, biology, oceanography or field ecology plus 2 years of related experience with fieldwork and analytical lab instrumentation. Must have experience with, or be able to demonstrate ability to learn to operate the following instruments: Flow cytometer, nutrient autoanalyzer, CHN analyzer, total organic carbon analyzer. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are required to work with diverse researchers. Small boating experience desirable. Must pass physical exam required in advance of field expeditions. Fieldwork is strenuous, involving extreme weather and occasional heavy lifting.

The salary range is commensurate with experience.
