Research Site History
Historically, Hog Island Bay was dominated by seagrasses. However, in the 1920s and early 1930s seagrass was extirpated by a combination of disease and extreme storms. Currently the lagoon is dominated by mud bottoms, with seagrass recovery only now starting after more than 70 years. Numerous VCR/LTER research efforts have centered on the "shoal site" located south of the Machipongo Inlet channel.
