Long Term Ecological Research Network

Currently JRN and SGS and BNZ have operational installations at or near the site. The USDA is planning to expand their Network and is looking for potential LTER sites to install the equipment. A clear view 10 degrees from the horizon is needed for the instruments, and they require power and telephone access. For sites wishing to install their own equipment, the cost runs about $50k - The USDA will collect, process and store the data. The data collect from these instruments is similar to the AERONET Sunphotometer data that are currently collected at some LTER sites, but a less suited to calibration/validation of satellite data than they are of collecting light data important to productivity measurements etc. The sunphotometer data currently provide little UV information and are less of a continuous measurement of UV and VIS light (cloud contaminated sunphotometer data are stored, but not processed).   Further information on the USDA UVB monitoring sites can be found at "http://uvb.nrel.colostate.edu/UVB/"
