Sensors are an essential part of scientific inquiry, yet no central sensor resource is currently available to address the sensor needs of ecological community. Many environmental sensor projects are known only in small scientific circles, and information regarding sensors and their manufacturers are not typically oriented towards the scientific community.
The following sensor information is a result of a collaborative effort between the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network office and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). The goal of the project was to compile an in situ sensor resource specifically for the terrestrial and aquatic ecological communities. The following documents are a first attempt at building a sensor information database for the ecological community. Included are state-of-the-art sensor technologies, large scale ecological projects and networks involved in the use of in situ sensors, and sensor manufacturers. Databases already in existence have been included in this document in an effort to consolidate sensor information into one place.
